The BEETHAM dump began as an illegal roadside dumping spot one day by residents of POS… over time, other people joined in and threw their garbage there until it became so large it HAD to be taken under the control of the Government of T&T.
Currently, the Beetham is OVER CAPACITY, and scheduled for closure(and has been for YEARS). However, without any plans for a new landfill to be created, it continues to be used as the largest and most toxic of the dumps of Trinidad, accruing over 1000 tonnes of garbage a DAY!*
Where does this material go, if the site is over capacity? Well, its burnt, to clear way for tomorrow’s garbage, and the next day, and the next…
Burning of plastic (which accounts for 20% of this material)^ is incredibly toxic and with the winds blowing directly into downtown POS, harmful for everyone!
These are the corrupted ‘lungs’ of Trinidad, that affect us all!
There is hope though!
80% of your garbage is made up of material that IS RECYCLABLE!^ We can divert this waste and be more responsible. Start with Plastic and see for yourself! Its so simple and yet together it goes so far!
